Every winter, Humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of the Hawaiian Islands to nurse their calves. The island of Maui is particularly special this time of year because the shallow waters surrounding the island serve as a “nursery” of sorts for the baby humpbacks. Because of the high concentration of whales (and their proximity to shore), you can sometimes hear the males speaking to each other while snorkeling.
