I had the honor of photographing Allison and TJ’s wedding a few years ago in Houston, Texas. Since their wedding, they’ve been on many adventures together, including moving from Texas to Colorado!

We’ve stayed in touch over the years, and this past year they decided they wanted to do something extra special to celebrate their anniversary— go on their first ever camping trip together and book an anniversary photoshoot.

While embarking on your first camping trip is an adventure all on its own, A + TJ were extra badass considering a cold front moved in the weekend of our shoot and their tent got beat up pretty badly during an insane windstorm. Despite the unpredictable weather, we managed to have a gorgeous (albeit chilly) sunset session and every frozen finger was worth it.

We spent the evening chasing light, moving from one rim of the canyon to another until a baby crescent moon appeared and we loaded up to head back to Moab. When we first started planning Allison and TJ’s anniversary session, we knew for sure we wanted the location to be somewhere around Moab, Utah. The drive from their home in Colorado wouldn’t be too bad, and neither of them had been to Utah before!

After they finished their location questionnaire, I did some scouting and sent over a few options—arches, canyon rims, sprawling red rock—the hardest part was choosing since it feels like every view in Moab is straight out of a painting. They really wanted a “top of the world” kind of feel for their session, so we opted for Dead Horse Point State Park.

Between the cool tones of the La Sal Mountains, to the red and orange hues of the canyon walls and sandstone towers, I felt like we were in a desert dreamscape.

Getting to document so many sweet moments in Allison and TJ’s relationship has been such an honor, and I’m so excited to get to share a few of my favorites with you.

So, put on some Caamp and enjoy this stunning sunset anniversary session from one of the most beautiful deserts in the U.S.
